Design Corner - Design Tips by Laura

Summer Decorating Tips

Take a fresh look at your yard or balcony. Try to think of your exterior space as another room.

  • 1  An outdoor rug placed under the dining table brings the "room" together and sets the focus where it should be – on you and your friends having fun.
  • 2  Tall plants will mask an ugly view and can make your corner of the yard feel cozy and protected.
  • 3  Placemats and seat cushions designed for the outdoors soften those hours spent lounging and laughing, and they add a civilized touch.
  • 4  Fire pits are available in a wide range of prices and add warmth and charm to a chilly evening.
  • 5  Avoid harsh spotlights that shine directly at your guests. Lamps should illuminate the pathway, for safety. Candles are nice for atmosphere. White lights wrapped around a balcony railing will add a bit of sparkle.
  • 6  Wireless speakers will get the party started and keep it humming along.
  • 7  If you have the space, market umbrellas make it comfortable to stay outside in the rain or on a blistering hot day.
  • 8  Lastly, if you have room for a hammock, go for it. A good read in the backyard on a gorgeous day – bliss!
