Design Corner – Design Tips by Laura
Collections are the icing on the cake of decorating – if you take it easy. To create impactful displays, try this:
- 1 Repeat shapes or stick to a single color. Example: a collection of football helmets or pottery in one color.
- 2 Pick something to collect and then put energy into that. Having a small number of lots of items creates visual chaos.
- 3 Only keep items that are useful or meaningful.
- 4 After buying a new item, take a fresh look at what you have. Do you still love everything? If not, edit.
- 5 If your collection is extensive, rotate the displays. Every few months put some pieces in storage and bring out "new" items.
- 6 Enhance a treasure with lighting. A spotlight can make the most modest item look rich.
- 7 Take photos of your displays. This is handy if you want to remember an arrangement. And, it can be useful to document your treasures for insurance purposes.
