Design Corner – Design Tips by Laura

January Decorating Tips

January is the fresh start month and the furniture sales are tempting.
Here are some things to consider before you go hunting and gathering.

  • 1  Measure your room. This includes the fireplace opening, windows and sill height, and doorways.
  • 2  Buy pieces that are flexible. A sectional looks great in a very large room, but in a smaller house, you might only be able to use it on one wall. A sofa, loveseat and chair or a couch and two chairs can be used in a variety of arrangements.
  • 3  Bring along photos of your rooms.
  • 4  Think about the view. Do you have distinct spaces or does everything flow together? Imagine sitting in the dining room – what would you like to see in the next room?
  • 5  One piece you love will help dictate the rest of the décor. This could be artwork, a great rug or a couch with pattern.
  • 6  Window coverings can take the room from casual to formal. Be honest with how you live and how you want the room to feel – silk drapes or textured blinds?
  • 7  Think proportion. A huge flat screen TV will overwhelm an 8’x10’ room.
  • 8  Need help? You can always call Laura to arrange a furniture and space plan consultation!
